How many National Park sites are in the Western Region?

The Western Region is so diverse, which might be the reason for 61 National Park sites. The beautiful rocks, mountains, and deserts can explain why 15 of those 61 sites have earned major National Park status. From the Pueblos to the volcanoes; the Redwoods to the Saguaros – you will find yourself wanting to visit this region over and over again.

Follow the links to find reviews of all the parks I’ve visited in those states. If I didn’t link a state, that means I have not yet visited any parks in that state. I hope to finish up the Hawaiian National Parks in 2023.

American Samoa – 1 site
Arizona – 21 sites
California – 27 sites
Guam – 1 site
Hawaii – 8 sites
Nevada – 3 sites

The best sites in the Western Region

I have only visited park sites in two of the states in this region, so obviously take that into consideration while looking at my favorites. I have yet to visit major parks like Yosemite, the Redwoods, or Joshua Tree. Also, Arizona and Hawaii are vastly different, so it’s hard to even compare them. My top 3 are based on my overall experience.

No. 3: Grand Canyon National Park

I spent about 12 hours in the Grand Canyon, which is not nearly enough. A return trip to visit the North Rim is high on my radar. I loved the canyon views, the vegetation, and the unreal backdrop that the Canyon provided. It’s easy to see why the Grand Canyon is on everyone’s bucket list, and I dream of the day I can back to hike to the bottom!

No. 2: Pu’uhonua o Honaunau NHP

I absolutely loved this park. There are several miles of walking trails that take you to multiple interest points, or you can spend the day at the beach! I loved walking on the lava trails and looking out into the endless blue waters. I rave more about this park site in one of my blog posts. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to.

No. 1: Hawaii Volcanoes NP

I think about Hawai’i Volcanoes often, it is just so diverse! There are hikes of varying difficulty, thick vegetation, an actual crater you can walk across, lava tubes, and so much more! I also rave about Volcanoes in the same blog post. Everything about this park is nothing like any other park I’ve been to. And to do it all in Hawaii is really the true luxury.
