Time Required at Harriet Tubman UR NHP

If you only visit the Visitor Center and museum, you will probably only need about 2 hours; however, listed below are two more activities you could do in addition to the Harriet Tubman museum.

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge

The Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is right next door to the Historical Park. It’s open Tuesday-Sunday from 10am-4pm and cost $3 per private vehicle to enter. There are a couple of walking trails and a self-guided driving tour.

I spent about 2 hours at the Refuge doing the driving tour. It was beautiful! I saw an eagle’s nest and a few other unique birds/wildlife. It was not crowded at all.

Harriet Tubman Byway

If you have the time, the Harriet Tubman Byway is a 125 mile scenic drive starting at the Dorchester County Visitor Center. It winds all through the Eastern Shore, up through Delaware, and ends in Philadelphia. It includes over 30 sites including a memorial garden, Brodess Farm, and Bucktown General Store. If you don’t have the time to drive the entire 125 miles, I recommend seeing just a few of the sites that are right in Dorchester County.

Know before you go

Besides the museum and refuge, there isn’t much to do in this area. If you head towards Cambridge there is more life, but the Harriet Tubman NHP is in a pretty remote area. There is no food close by so make sure to pack a lunch or time your visit accordingly.

This is a nicely done museum, and even though I did not go to any sites on the byway, I’m sure it is also lovely. However, I would not make a special trip to this park; unless of course you are a huge Harriet Tubman buff. I visited the site on my way up to New York coming from Ocean City. I’m glad I did not do this as a day trip from where I live (Hagerstown). I’m not sure it would have been worth it.
