How many National Park sites are in the Mid-Atlantic Region?
The Mid-Atlantic Region has 56 total park sites; 2 major National Parks and 54 smaller units. This area has several famous Civil War and Revolutionary War sites. It also houses a section of the Appalachian Trail and C&O Canal. In PA there are few steam engine sites as well as a few National Recreation Areas.

The best sites in the Mid-Atlantic Region
Despite the fact that I haven’t visited every site in this region yet, there are a few that I visit frequently. I live in this region so this is part of the reason. However, even if I didn’t live here I would want to visit some of these places often.
Harper’s Ferry
Harper’s Ferry is an adorable little town that is very rich in Civil War history, being famous for John Brown’s raid. There are multiple buildings to explore and there are normally a variety of ranger programs offered during the busy months. Harper’s Ferry is right up along both the C&O Canal and the Appalachian Trail. The AT actually goes through the town and the trail headquarters (the ATC) is housed in Harper’s Ferry. The history is great but that’s not all!
The town is nestled perfectly on the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. There are multiple outdoor adventure outfitters just minutes away that offer white-water rafting, water tubing, and kayaking trips. There are campgrounds, breweries, and so many local restaurants. I think you could make a whole vacation just out of Harper’s Ferry.
Gettysburg National Military Park
Gettysburg is one of my favorite places to visit. It is a famous Civil War battlefield, but I’m amazed at the new things I discover and learn each time I go. Just like Harper’s Ferry, the town is adorable. There are a ton of cute shops and delicious eateries to try.
One of my favorite things about Gettysburg NMP is the amount of ranger programs they offer, and that they offer them year-round. Many parks only offer programs in their busiest months, but Gettysburg will hold discussions and ranger-led hikes during all months. Make sure to visit the cemetery, and go in December to see the wreaths if you can swing it.
Shenandoah National Park
Shenandoah is my happy place, my home away from home. I swear you could blind-fold me, fly me all around the country, and then drop me down in the mountains of Shenandoah and I’d know where I’m at. It’s so peaceful and a hiker’s dream. I go there half a dozen times a year because I’m close. If that’s not possible, at least spend a few days soaking in the views.
