Park Overview
Montezuma Castle protects cliff dwellings that were built by the Sinagua people between the years of AD 1100 and 1425. The main structure is 5 stories and has approximately 20 rooms. It was designated a National Monument in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt.
Getting to Montezuma Castle
Montezuma Castle is located in Camp Verde, Arizona. It is about 1.5 hours north of Phoenix and 1 hour south of Flagstaff. It is also in the same 1 hour radius of Tuzigoot, Walnut Canyon, Wupatki, and Sunset Crater. I highly recommend making a long road trip out of all of these National Monuments!
Fees & Cancellation Stamp
It cost $10 per adult (16 and older) to enter Montezuma Castle. The pass is good for 7 consecutive days and also allows entrance to Tuzigoot National Monument. The America the Beautiful pass is accepted here.
Time Required
Allow 1-2 hours to visit this park. You will want to spend time in the museum, walk the ground, and sit in on a ranger program.
Things to do
There is small museum and bookstore at the entrance. After leaving the museum you enter the main grounds, which sits at the bottom of limestone cliffs. There is a 1/3 mile paved trail that takes you around the grounds where you can see Montezuma Castle, Castle A, and a diorama. There is also a river overlook.
Montezuma Well is a sub-set of the castle, but it located about 15-20 minutes north. If you are already heading north to other monuments, this would be perfect to add on to your trip.
